Assessed value
Homes are assessed at 10% of value. This is your "assessed value."
Taxable value
The homestead exemption covers the first $75,000 of a home you own and live in. $12,000 minus $7,500 leaves $4,500 to tax.
Mill
One mill is one dollar of tax for every $1,000 of taxable value. Each renewal on the ballot is a number of mills.
Your yearly tax
All five renewals add up to 43.16 mills. $4,500 of taxable value × 43.16 ÷ 1,000. About $16 a month.
Fully exempt
The exemption covers all of it. That's 61% of the homesteads in Franklin Parish. Camps, rentals and businesses get no exemption and pay on the full assessed value.
Special cases
Disabled veterans get a bigger exemption. Owners 65 and up, and disabled owners, can freeze their assessed value. Farm and timber land is valued on what it grows, not what it would sell for. Business buildings count at 15%, not 10%. The Assessor's office can tell you which of these apply to you.
